LAWLESS Movie Review

Wednesday, August 29th, 2012

Take a good look Hollywood; this is how you produce a great action movie that offers real entertainment value that will stand the test of time. Combine a great storyline, add skilled actors, sprinkle with the right amount of violence and romance for added flavor, and voilà you have the makings of Oscar-worthiness. The Proposition Writer Nick Cave and Director John Hillcoat, are back at it again. This talented duo literally knocked this one out of the ballpark with an all-star lineup reminiscent of action flicks such as Gangs of New York and Brian De Palmer/Kevin Costner’s The Untouchables. This real-life storyline was virtually brought to life with the likes of Shia LaBeouf (Transformers), Tom Hardy (Inception) and Jason Clarke (Public Enemies). They are superb together as siblings, with support from veteran “bad guys,” such as Gary Oldman and Guy Pearce.

LaBeouf goes the distance, to play the role of weakling little brother whose destiny is to man up and protect the family’s reputation of being “immortals”. His character brings out the dynamics of his skill set and drives him in to some of his finest acting, to date. He is absolutely spot-on in this role.

In addition Demarest Films, a financing and production company which was launched in April by Lambert Media Group’s Michael Lambert and Sam Englebardt and William D. Johnson have joined the $40 million picture as co-financier and co-producer, while Beijing’s E Stars Entertainment will co-finance. Paranoia will be distributed in the U.S. by Relativity Media.

This high-tech corporate espionage thriller is directed by Robert Luketic (21) and stars Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games), Oscar®-nominee Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight), Oscar®-nominee Harrison Ford (Indiana Jones), Lucas Till (X-Men: First Class), Amber Heard (The Rum Diary), Embeth Davidtz (The Amazing Spider-Man), Julian McMahon (Nip/Tuck), Josh Holloway (Lost) and Oscar®-winner Richard Dreyfuss (Red).

Paranoia is being produced by Alexandra Milchan of Emjag Productions, William D. Johnson of Demarest Films and Deepak Nayar of Kintop Reliance, Reliance’s joint production venture with Kintop Pictures. IM Global CEO Stuart Ford, Scott Lambert of Film 360, Sam Englebardt of Demarest Films, Allen Liu of E Stars, Douglas Urbanski, Christophe Riandee of Gaumont, Ryan Kavanaugh and Tucker Tooley of Relativity Media will serve as executive producers.

Said IM Global CEO Ford, “Reliance and IM Global are delighted that Demarest Films and E Stars have joined us as partners on the eve of what promises to be an exciting project for all of us.”

Producer William D. Johnson of Demarest Films said, “The creative team behind Paranoia as well as our producing partners at IM Global and Kintop Reliance will no doubt bring this thriller to life on the big screen. This is the type of film Demarest is looking to get involved in – commercially viable projects which will evoke audiences in the U.S. and abroad.”

Relativity acquired U.S. rights to market and distribute Paranoia on the eve of Cannes Film Festival, with IM Global handling international distribution. The film is set to debut in U.S. theatres on September 27, 2013.

Collaborating with Luketic behind the scenes is a top-notch below-the-line creative team including: director of photography David Tattersall (The Green Mile), production designer David Brisbin (Sinister), art director Scott Anderson (Win Win), costume designer Luca Mosca (21), editor Dany Cooper (Queen of the Damned), and stunt coordinator Stephen Pope (Secrets, Dreams, Faith and Wonder: Mass for the New Millennium). But after one costly mistake, Adam is blackmailed by ruthless CEO Nicholas Wyatt (Gary Oldman) to turn corporate spy by going to work for the firm’s top competitor, which is run by Wyatt’s old mentor, Jock Goddard (Harrison Ford). Adam soon finds himself delivered into prepackaged success, living his fantasy life of old-world boardrooms, private clubs, exotic cars, and all the spoils of Manhattan bachelorhood. However, behind the scenes, he is merely a pawn in Wyatt’s power play, and must search for a way out from under his boss, who will stop at nothing, even murder, to gain a multi-billion dollar advantage.

The screenplay, based on the novel Paranoia by Joseph Finder, was written by Jason Dean Hall (Spread) from a previous draft by Barry Levy (Vantage Point).

Their newly appointed director, Vi Rose Hill (Latifah), stubbornly wants to stick with their tried-and-true traditional style, while the fiery G.G. Sparrow (Parton) thinks tried-and-true translates to tired-and-old. Shaking things up even more is the arrival of G.G.’s rebellious grandson, Randy (Jeremy Jordan). Randy has an ear for music, but he also has an eye for Vi Rose’s beautiful and talented daughter, Olivia (Keke Palmer), and the sparks between the two teenagers are causing even more friction between G.G. and Vi Rose. If these two strong-willed women can put aside their differences for the good of the people in their town, they–and their choir–may make the most joyful noise of all.

It’s enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop…except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O’Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), who come together to try to tear Cohen’s world apart. “The Gangster Squad” is a colorful retelling of events surrounding the LAPD’s efforts to take back their nascent city from one of the most dangerous mafia bosses of all time.

Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers. Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain, first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever… Gollum. Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities… A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

Director: Baz Luhrmann
Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Joel Edgerton, Carey Mulligan, Isla Fisher, Jason Clarke, Elizabeth Debicki, Amitabh Bachchan

“The Great Gatsby” follows Fitzgerald-like, would-be writer Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz and bootleg kings. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio) and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy (Carey Mulligan) and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton). It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.
