Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Wreck-It Ralph” Scores Big with Composer Henry Jackman, Plus Original Music from Skrillex, AKB48, Owl City and Buckner & Garcia

Friday, September 14th, 2012

The story of an arcade-game bad guy who embarks on a quest to prove he’s really a good guy, “Wreck-It Ralph” journeys through wildly diverse arcade-game worlds, including the ‘80s-era, 8-bit video-game world of Fix-It Felix, Jr., the ultra-modern first-person shooter game Hero’s Duty and the candy-coated cart-racing game Sugar Rush. Helping to differentiate these worlds from one another are unique cinematography, animation, effects and music. “Music is another way to set the stage and make these worlds completely different,” said producer Clark Spencer.

But not just any music. Filmmakers tapped diverse and unexpected artists to help tell the story. Composer Henry Jackman created the film’s score, which is complemented by original songs and music from Skrillex, AKB48, Owl City and Buckner & Garcia. Directed by Rich Moore, produced by Spencer and featuring the voices of John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer and Jane Lynch, “Wreck-It Ralph” crashes into theatres on Nov. 2, 2012. The film’s soundtrack from Walt Disney Records will be available Oct. 30, 2012.

“When it came to the music of ‘Wreck-It Ralph,’ said Moore, “we wanted to work with some really talented artists and I love that they aren’t necessarily the people audiences expect to hear in a Disney animated movie. But when they hear the music and how it supports the story and drives the emotion, they’ll say, ‘This is perfect.’”

Moore said he took his lead from the original director of animated movies. “Walt Disney was a pioneer when it came to music. What sounds like classics to us now—Ukulele Ike in ‘Pinocchio,’ Peggy Lee in ‘Lady and the Tramp’—were very unexpected choices.”

THE SCORE

Classically trained composer Henry Jackman (“Winnie the Pooh,” “X-Men: First Class”) was called on to write the score for “Wreck-It Ralph,” helping to shape the diverse worlds with music. Jackman researched arcade games and incorporated their classic sounds into the score, bringing the arcade and its individual games to life. “The music transports you,” said Moore. “It channels each era perfectly. [Henry Jackman] is fantastic.”

According to Jackman, the score was driven by the story, which allowed him to tap his classical roots, too. “When something emotional is developing, it actually opens the door to the orchestral score without it feeling imposed,” he said.

ORIGINAL SONGS

Ralph’s quest leads him to the intense, cy-bug-infested world of Hero’s Duty, where he hopes to land a medal. Underscoring the chaos and excitement of the first-person shooter game, GRAMMY®-winning artist Skrillex wrote the game-play music, “Bug Hunt,” hand-picking Netherlands’ producers/DJs/videogame soundtrack composers Noisia to remix the track for the album. “The mood of that game world is high-energy and futuristic. I make music with many different colors of the emotional spectrum—this reflects a more aggressive side of my music.”

Japan’s pop phenomenon AKB48 accompanies Ralph to the land of sweets with the aptly named theme song “Sugar Rush.” “We’ve always thought of Sugar Rush—with its nod to anime—as a game that may have originated in Japan,” said Spencer. “So we went to Japan and got the hottest J-pop group to perform the song that really sets the tone for this ’90s-era cart-racing game: young and hip.”

Owl City (“Fireflies,” “Good Time”) provides an upbeat and story-driven cap to the film with “When Can I See You Again?” According to singer/songwriter/instrumentalist Adam Young, the song offers a bit of an emotional tug-of-war. “It’s a very bouncy, happy, uplifting song, but there’s a bittersweet part of it, leaving a key relationship in the film open-ended.”

Also contributing to the end credits are Buckner & Garcia, the team behind the 1982 Top-10 hit “Pac-Man Fever.” Jerry Buckner of Buckner & Garcia co-produced the song “Wreck-It, Wreck-It Ralph” with hit songwriter/producer Jamie Houston (Steven Tyler, Macy Gray). “It was great to be invited to contribute a song to the movie and soundtrack,” said Buckner. “The song has an ‘80s pop flavor with a contemporary twist—we’re really happy with how it turned out.”

KAREN O WRITES AND RECORDS NEW SONG FOR DISNEY’S FRANKENWEENIE

Saturday, August 11th, 2012

Karen O has written an original song which will be featured in the end credits to Disney’s highly anticipated movie, Frankenweenie, directed by Tim Burton. “Strange Love” is included on Frankenweenie Unleashed!, a 14-track compilation of music from and inspired by the film. Frankenweenie Unleashed! will be released on September 25, 2012.

As singer/songwriter/composer and the lead singer for the rock band the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Karen O has collaborated with artists in music and film over the past ten years, including Spike Jonze, Trent Reznor, David Lynch, Flaming Lips, Barnaby Clay, Carter Burwell and many others. Karen composed the score for the acclaimed 2009 film Where The Wild Things Are (with Carter Burwell,) and she co-wrote the song All is Love (with Nick Zinner) which was nominated for a GRAMMY® Award and Golden Globe for Best Original Song for a Motion Picture. Most recently, Karen contributed vocals to the Trent Reznor produced cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” for David Fincher’s feature The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

Karen O told Rolling Stone, “Tim [Burton] wanted an unconventional unconditional love song. My music inspiration came out of the same era of B movie fright film references sprinkled throughout the film. I went in the direction of exotica and calypso stylistically because it’s quirky, good vibes music of that era and when you throw in a theramin solo it’s a marriage made in heaven. I remember Beetlejuice introducing me to the genius of Harry Belafonte’s calypso record so I wanted to give a nod to that too. We ended up with a love song for the end of the film to the film! Frankenweenie is so special, it’s an unbelievable honor to be involved with it.”

The Frankenweenie original motion picture soundtrack, with score by Oscar®-nominated and GRAMMY®-winning composer Danny Elfman will also be available on September 25, 2012. Elfman has established himself as one of Hollywood’s leading film composers and has written close to 50 film scores featuring his unique sound including Dark Shadows, Alice in Wonderland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Milk, Chicago, Batman, Spiderman, Men in Black trilogy, Edward Scissorhands and Pee Wee’s Big Adventure.

From creative genius Tim Burton (Alice in Wonderland, The Nightmare Before Christmas) comes Frankenweenie, a heartwarming tale about a boy and his dog. After unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, young Victor harnesses the power of science to bring his best friend back to life—with just a few minor adjustments. He tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when Sparky gets out, Victor’s fellow students, teachers and the entire town all learn that getting a new “leash on life” can be monstrous.

A stop-motion animated film, Frankenweenie was filmed in black and white and rendered in 3D, which will elevate the classic style to a whole new experience. Presented by Disney, Frankenweenie is directed by Tim Burton, produced by Tim Burton and Allison Abbate, from a screenplay by John August, based on an original idea by Tim Burton. Frankenweenie releases in U.S. theaters on October 5, 2012.

In addition to Karen O’s “Strange Love,” the Frankenweenie Unleashed! collection features original songs and one cover inspired by the stop-motion film event. The diverse range of artists includes Neon Trees, Mark Foster, Plain White Ts and Kimbra.

HANS ZIMMER SCORES “PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES”

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

Having scored the previous films in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, Hans Zimmer is back again to score “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.”

Hans Zimmer is one of the film industry’s most respected and sought-after composers with a career that encompasses more than 100 film and television scores. An Academy Award® winner for his score for “The Lion King,” Zimmer has also received eight additional Oscar® nominations for his work including “Inception,” “Sherlock Holmes,” “Gladiator,” “The Thin Red Line,” “Rain Man,” “As Good as It Gets,” “The Preacher’s Wife” and “The Prince of Egypt.” Other recent credits include “Rango,” “The Dark Knight” and “Batman Begins.” Among his many honors, Zimmer has also won two Golden Globes® and four Grammy Awards®.

This time around, the internationally and critically acclaimed recording artist and live performance sensation Rodrigo y Gabriela have been brought on board to write and collaborate with Zimmer on new material, perform on the score, write an end-credit song and shoot a music video.

With a fervent and growing fan base in both the U.S. and most European countries, Rodrigo y Gabriela are considered the premier guitar-playing duo in the world. They have sold over one million albums, have sold out arenas and headlined festivals worldwide, and in 2010 they were invited to share the stage with Beyoncé for a state dinner at the White House. The collaboration with Hans Zimmer is their first film score—an exciting and defining moment in their career. The duo’s willingness to explore musical expression and to embrace new sounds irrespective of fashion or trends, as well as their point-blank refusal to be pigeonholed in any particular genre, is the very foundation of Rodrigo y Gabriela.

Another interesting musical note for “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” is that Eduardo Cruz, Penélope Cruz’ brother, an up-and-coming composer/songwriter, wrote the piece of music for the highly choreographed Tango scene between Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz in the film. The scene is sure to be a film highlight, so Eduardo’s contribution will certainly be showcased.

An exciting addition to the great musical talent working on “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” is legendary Jazz great Arturo Sandoval. The Cuban born, four-time Grammy® award–winning trumpet player has signed on as the featured horn player for the score.

The film’s music team has also recruited iconic record producer Peter Asher, who joins the “Pirates 4” music party as a creative music consultant. Asher began his career as an artist in the early ’60s as Peter of Peter and Gordon fame, who had the number one hit “In a World Without Love,” which was written by Paul McCartney. Asher was asked by the Beatles to become head of A&R at Apple Records, where he signed James Taylor, later producing and managing Taylor too. Asher is a three-time Grammy® winner who has also produced Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, 10,000 Maniacs, Cher and Neil Diamond, to name a few. He is one of the greatest acoustic music producers of all time and will bring yet another level of expertise to the “Pirates 4” soundtrack.

With Zimmer’s musical genius, Rodrigo y Gabriela’s contributions and performances, and the rest of the team’s dynamic talents, including Music Supervisors Bob Badami and Melissa Muik, the soundtrack for “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” is sure to become a must-have compilation when released by Walt Disney Records on May 17, 2011.

“SUCKER PUNCH” SOUNDTRACK SET FOR MARCH 22nd

Friday, February 25th, 2011

WaterTower Music is thrilled to announce the release of “Sucker Punch: The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack” on March 22, 2011. The audio companion to the film director Zack Snyder describes as “Alice In Wonderland with machine guns” has taken over two years to create, and will delight filmgoers and music fans of all generations.

Snyder (Watchmen, 300), collaborated with Grammy®-nominated composer and music director Marius de Vries (Moulin Rouge!) and composer Tyler Bates (Watchmen, 300, Californication) to select the collection of songs featured on the soundtrack, which play an integral role in the film.

“Working with Marius and re-teaming with Tyler on Sucker Punch’s soundtrack was an extraordinary experience,” said Snyder. “Sucker Punch is a film created with multiple levels of reality, so this same layered construct had to be considered and applied when approaching the music. The selection of songs we chose and the various ways in which they were each re-envisioned had to add depth, dimension and meaning to the sequences they exist within. Marius and Tyler did an amazing job creating an intricate musical landscape to accompany the surreal imagery of the film.”

Fascinatingly reworked versions of classic songs illuminate the soundtrack, with the film’s star Emily Browning covering “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)” (Eurythmics), “Where Is My Mind?” (The Pixies), and “Asleep” (The Smiths), and stars Carla Gugino (Watchmen) and Oscar Isaac (Robin Hood) performing a sultry, musical theatre-inspired version of “Love Is The Drug” (Roxy Music). Alison Mosshart (The Dead Weather, The Kills) and Carla Azar (Autolux) team up on a haunting version of “Tomorrow Never Knows” (The Beatles). Björk fans will love the newly created version of “Army Of Me (Sucker Punch Remix)” that features Skunk Anansie and clocks in at nearly seven minutes.

Intense, sexy, edgy and highly imaginative, these new and unrestrained arrangements of legendary songs, along with the original mash up of Queen’s “I Want It All/We Will Rock You” featuring Armageddon Aka Geddy (Terror Squad), are the backbone of the film driving the relationship between the motives of the characters and the lengths they are willing to go for survival.

TRACK LISTING:

1. “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)” – Emily Browning
2. “Army Of Me (Sucker Punch Remix)” – Björk featuring Skunk Anansie
3. “White Rabbit” – Emiliana Torrini
4. “I Want It All”/“We Will Rock You” Mash-Up – Queen with Armageddon Aka Geddy
5. “Search And Destroy” – Skunk Anansie
6. “Tomorrow Never Knows” – Alison Mosshart and Carla Azar
7. “Where Is My Mind?” – Yoav featuring Emily Browning
8. “Asleep” – Emily Browning
9. “Love Is The Drug” – Carla Gugino and Oscar Isaac
