BATTLESHIP Movie Review

Friday, May 18th, 2012

This movie fires all weapons and does not hold back. It is action packed, intense, and chock full of eye candy. This is the type of movie that is easy pickins for critics to devour. What they seemingly fail to realize is that a movie like this is exactly that; it is what it is, nothing more, nothing less. It is an action adventure with enough eye candy of all sorts to entertain and it does exactly that. Aren’t most summer action adventure mainstream blockbusters all about the action, adventure, special effects, and overall eye candy? What else would you expect from a movie based on a Hasbro game, with a mega budget, an attractive cast, a not-too-complicated but farfetched story, and all directed by a man that knows what he’s doing when it comes to action adventures? I would put Director Peter Berg in the same category as Michael Bay, for example. I for one am a fan of his work and this film is no different. He did not disappoint me at all. READ FULL REVIEW

Relativity Prepares to Unleash Paranoia – In Theatres September 27, 2013

Friday, May 18th, 2012

Relativity Media announced today that it has acquired U.S. rights to market and distribute IM Global’s currently-titled Paranoia, directed by Robert Luketic (21) and starring Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games), Oscar®-nominee Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight), Oscar®-nominee Harrison Ford (Indiana Jones) and Lucas Till (X-Men: First Class). Production is targeted to begin this summer and the film will release in theatres on September 27, 2013. IM Global will handle international distribution.

In this high-stakes thriller, Adam Cassidy (Liam Hemsworth) is a charming, blue collar guy trying to get ahead in his entry-level job at Wyatt Telecom. But after one costly and illegal mistake, Adam is confronted by ruthless CEO Nicholas Wyatt. He won’t turn Adam in under one condition: Adam must agree to infiltrate the competition as a corporate spy. Adam soon finds himself packaged for success, surrounded by glamorous boardrooms, expensive cars, and a life he only dreamed of. But behind the scenes, Wyatt is pulling the strings – stopping at nothing, even murder, to win a multi-billion dollar advantage. Realizing he’s nothing more than a pawn in his boss’s ruthless game, Adam’s only way out – is to go in deeper.

The screenplay was written by Jason Dean Hall (Spread) from a previous draft by Barry Levy (Vantage Point), based on the novel Paranoia by Joseph Finder.

Paranoia will be produced by Alexandra Milchan of Emjag Productions, Scott Lambert of Film 360, a division of Management 360, and Deepak Nayar. IM Global CEO Stuart Ford, Douglas Urbanski and Gaumont’s Christophe Riandee will executive produce.

“Paranoia is a gripping story and we’re excited to add the project to our growing slate bolstered by this stellar cast. We look forward to working with our partners IM Global on bringing this film to audiences everywhere,” said Relativity’s President, Tucker Tooley.

THE DICTATOR Movie Review

Wednesday, May 16th, 2012

Sacha Baron Cohen is at it again, thank goodness because I really needed to overwrite the memories of Bruno with something better. I am a big fan of Borat, even with all its outlandishness, but Bruno was just wrong. Sacha now brings us this new character, Aladeen the dictator, and he’s back to basics. Yes the movie is brimming with outlandishness as you’d expect. There is a good amount of shock humor, normal humor, stupid humor, slapstick, and it’s even corny at times too. The movie itself is not exactly great, but it’s not meant to be; it’s meant to be funny and it is there that it succeeds, if you don’t mind Sacha’s style of humor. He really pushes the envelope with this extreme humor. It’s what he does best. It’s crazy, it’s raunchy, and it’s fun. READ FULL REVIEW

The Weinstein Company Acquires Australian Charmer “THE SAPPHIRES”

Wednesday, May 16th, 2012

The Weinstein Company (TWC) announced today that they have acquired from Goalpost Film worldwide rights, with the exception of the UK & Ireland , Australia , New Zealand , France , Canada , Israel , Portugal and airlines, to THE SAPPHIRES. The film, directed by acclaimed Aboriginal actor and theater director Wayne Blair, stars funnyman Chris O’Dowd (BRIDESMAIDS, FRIENDS WITH KIDS), Deborah Mailman (RADIANCE, OFFSPRING), who was the first Aboriginal actress to win the AFI Award for Best Actress, Jessica Mauboy (BRAN NUE DAE), an Australian pop artist who was the runner-up on Australian Idol in 2006 and breakout stars Shari Sebbens and Miranda Tapsell. The screenplay was written by Aboriginal playwright Tony Briggs, whose mother and family members were part of The Sapphires group, and Keith Thompson. Warwick Thornton, previous winner of the Camera d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival for SAMSON AND DELILAH, is the film’s Director of Photography. The announcement was made today by TWC Co-Chairman Harvey Weinstein, COO David Glasser, and Co-SVPs of Acquisitions Negeen Yazdi and Dan Guando.

Inspired by a true story, THE SAPPHIRES follows four vivacious, young and talented Australian Aboriginal girls from a remote mission as they learn about love, friendship and war when their all girl group The Sapphires entertains the U.S. troops in Vietnam in 1968. Cynthia (Tapsell), Gail (Mailman), Julie (Mauboy) and Kay (Sebbens) are discovered by Dave (O’Dowd), a good-humored talent scout with a kind heart, very little rhythm but a great knowledge of soul music. As their manager, Dave books the sisters their first true gig giving them their first taste of stardom, and travels them to Vietnam to sing for the American troops.

The film has been chosen as an Official Selection for the 65th Cannes Film Festival and will play on May 19th, which is the first Saturday of the festival.

“THE SAPPHIRES is a rare and special film, and all of us on director Wayne Blair’s team are thrilled to be working with The Weinstein Company which we know will be the very best home for this film,” said Goalpost Film’s Tristan Whalley.

Added Goalpost Pictures’ Rosemary Blight, “Passionate, innovative and creative marketing and distribution is what independent films require to reach an audience. The Weinstein Company is one of the most talented distributors of independent films in the world, and we are thrilled that THE SAPPHIRES is in such great hands. It is a wonderful acknowledgement of the extraordinary work of the cast and crew led so magnificently by director Wayne Blair.”

Said Weinstein, “These girls light up the screen as much as their music lights up the stage. We’re thrilled to bring the stories and music from these sisters to audiences all over the world.”

Added Guando and Yazdi, “Wayne Blair tells this story in the most charming way by capturing the excitement, heartbreak and joy these girls experienced on their incredible journey. This is a very real, entertaining and touching story with a stellar cast and an incredible soundtrack. We’ve been passionate about this project since the day we read the script, and have always felt that it would be a perfect fit for The Weinstein Company.”

Tribeca Film Announces Acquisition of THE COMEDY Starring Tim Heidecker

Tuesday, May 15th, 2012

Tribeca Film announced today that it has acquired all North American rights to The Comedy, director Rick Alverson’s provocative character study, which is already one of the most talked about films since it bowed at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. The film, which Variety called “compulsively fascinating,” and Film Threat noted as “one of the most wildly inappropriate and pitch black comedies I’ve ever seen” also played South by Southwest and is set for BAMcinemaFEST this June, will be released in October 2012. Jagjaguwar, the prominent independent music label known for artists such as Bon Iver and Sharon Van Etten, produced The Comedy in conjunction with Greyshack Films and Larry Fessenden’s Glass Eye Pix, along with Mike S. Ryan and Brent Kunkle producing. Rough House Pictures, the Production Company of Danny McBride, David Gordon Green, Jody Hill, and Matt Reilly attached themselves to the film during Sundance.

Tribeca Film plans a select theatrical release day and date with on-demand platforms where it will be available in 40+ million homes through a variety of video-on-demand offerings, as well as iTunes, Amazon Watch Instantly, VUDU, Xbox and Samsung Media Hub.

On the cusp of inheriting his father’s estate, Swanson (Tim Heidecker, “Tim & Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!”) is a man with unlimited options. An aging hipster in Brooklyn, he spends his days in aimless recreation with like-minded friends (“Tim & Eric” co-star Eric Wareheim, LCD Soundsystem frontman James Murphy and comedian Gregg Turkington a.k.a.“Neil Hamburger”) in games of comic irreverence and mock sincerity. As Swanson grows restless of the safety a sheltered life offers him, he tests the limits of acceptable behavior, pushing the envelope in every way he can. Heidecker’s deadpan delivery cleverly masks a deep desire for connection and sense in the modern world. The Comedy wears its name on its sleeve, but director Rick Alverson’s powerful and provocative character study touches a darkness behind the humor that resonates with viewers long after the story ends.

“Tim Heidecker’s performance pushes the limits and the result is a film that feels refreshingly new and fearless,” said Geoff Gilmore, Chief Creative Officer of Tribeca Enterprises. “We look forward to the film sparking conversation and debate when it reaches a wider audience through Tribeca Film.”

“My hope is that The Comedy may be seen as both a challenging, cautionary tale and an unapologetic immersion in a culture of irony and recreational cruelty many have come to find liberating,” said Rick Alverson. “We’re very happy to be in the competent hands of Tribeca Film and look forward to a partnership that will bring this movie to a wide audience.”
