Pixar’s UP Movie Review

Friday, May 29th, 2009

Dug: My name is Dug. I have just met you and I love you.

Once you meet Dug, you’ll love him too. He is as adorable and cute as this movie . . . and it’s a talking dog! I’m a fan of all things Pixar and this one is no exception. Although I will say that this is a little different from what you might be accustomed to from Pixar. I would also say it’s not the best from Pixar but it is still very good nonetheless. It is just as colorful with beautiful graphics. You find yourself attached to the colorful characters as well. The story is chock full of positive lessons too. What makes it different is that this one is more “human”. It will tug at your heart strings more than any other. Remember the beginning scenes of Finding Nemo and how sad it was and how it at least almost made you cry? Well, I’ll admit that I got teary eyed a few times while watching this film. Hayden Panetierre, Star of “I Love You, Beth Cooper,” Invites Americans to Reveal Their Moments of Truth

Friday, May 29th, 2009

Everyone harbors a secret desire to reveal their true feelings though rarely do we act on it. But the new motion picture comedy I LOVE YOU, BETH COOPER and its star Hayden Panettiere are about to change all that by inviting people to upload their confessional videos to iloveyoubethcooper.com for a special event entitled BETH COOPER MOMENTS OF TRUTH.

Inspired by the film’s protagonist, school valedictorian Denis Cooverman, who proclaims his love for the hottest and most popular girl in school during his graduation speech, “Beth Cooper Moments of Truth” participants will tape a special message they’ve always wanted to express – to a friend, parent, love interest… anyone. Selected videos will be featured in television spots for I LOVE YOU, BETH COOPER.

Hayden launches the campaign on www.iloveyoubethcooper.com on May 20 with a series of sample “moment of truth” videos that will be promoted on MySpace, Facebook and YouTube. The site also includes a Twitter tool that allows users to tweet their secret confessions anonymously or via their personal Twitter accounts.

I LOVE YOU, BETH COOPER opens in theaters everywhere July 10. Directed by Chris Columbus (”Home Alone,” “Mrs. Doubtfire,” “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”), the film is based on the popular 2007 novel of the same name by Larry Doyle of The Simpsons and Beavis and Butthead fame

Focus’ Africa First Program

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

Following the success of last year’s inaugural program, Focus Features will on Monday, June 1st, begin accepting entries for a second year of its Africa First Program. The uniquely conceived initiative, with funds earmarked specifically for emerging filmmakers of African nationality and residence, offers eligible and participating filmmakers the chance to be awarded $10,000 in financing for pre-production, production, and/or post-production on their narrative short film made in continental Africa and tapping into the resources of the film industry there. Complete details on Africa First – including application information – can be accessed through www.filminfocus.com/africafirst. Focus CEO James Schamus made the announcement today.

Launched in 2008, Africa First last fall awarded $10,000 apiece to five winning filmmakers; Mr. Edouard Bamporiki (from Rwanda ), Ms. Jenna Bass (from South Africa ), Mr. Jan-Hendrik Beetge (also from South Africa ), Ms. Dyana Gaye (from Senegal ), and Ms. Wanuri Kahiu (from Kenya ). Their short films are, respectively, Long Coat, a drama about a young Hutu coming to terms with Rwanda’s and his own family’s past; The Tunnel, a 1980s-set story centering around a 10-year-old girl’s quest; The Abyss Boys, a thriller about an illegal trade in a small fishing town; the public transportation musical N’Dar [Saint Louis Blues]; and Pumzi [Breath], a futuristic sci-fi tale.

Africa First is supervised by producer Kisha Imani Cameron (…Sometimes in April), whose Completion Films company has a first-look and consulting deal with Focus, and who coordinates Africa First submissions and evaluations with Focus director of production Matthew Plouffe. In addition to on-site work in Africa, the winning filmmakers of Africa First also participate in a New York City weekend of one-on-one workshop discussions with members of the program’s international advisory board of experts in African cinema and such Focus executives as Mr. Schamus and president of production John Lyons, covering such topics as international distribution and the economics of studio financing; and with Ms. Cameron and Mr. Plouffe.

Five (5) filmmakers will be awarded $10,000 apiece. The submission period begins on Monday, June 1st, 2009 and runs through Saturday, August 1st, 2009. The five filmmakers selected will retain the copyrights and the distribution rights to their completed shorts, with the exception of North American rights; Focus will retain those, as well as the right of first negotiation to productions derived from the shorts, such as a feature-length expansion. The announcement of the selections will be made on or about October 1st, 2009.

SYNOPSIS:11-year-old Coraline Jones (voiced by Dakota Fanning) has just moved with her parents (Teri Hatcher and John Hodgman) to a new home in Oregon . With no friends and her parents distracted by work, the feisty and adventurous Coraline sets out to find some excitement in her isolated new environment. She is befriended—or, as she sees it, pestered—by a local boy close to her age, Wybie Lovat (Robert Bailey Jr.) and visits her older neighbors, eccentric British actresses Miss Spink and Miss Forcible (Jennifer Saunders and Dawn French) as well as the arguably even more eccentric Russian, Mr. Bobinsky (Ian McShane). Just as she’s beginning to think her new home is utterly uninteresting, she uncovers a secret door which leads to a parallel existence much like her own life—but much better. The adults, including the solicitous Other Mother (also voiced by Teri Hatcher) welcome her warmly. And Coraline gets far more attention there—even from the mysterious Cat (Keith David). She begins to think that this Other World might be where she truly belongs. But when her wondrously off-kilter, fantastical visit turns dangerous, Coraline must summon all her resourcefulness, determination and courage to get back home—and save her real family.
