HULK VS DVD Review

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

If you were, or are, one of those Marvel kids who loves to read their comics, I am sure that you have entered at least once in one of those endless discussions of which is the strongest Superhero, in these discussions the heroes are always measured and compared against the villains they defeat, and usually that is how conclusions and sides are taken. Well, that is all good and fun, but villains as strong as they can be they are always meant to lose. But what happens when two heroes ,who are always meant to win, face each other in a no rules smack down? What side will you take? Marvel comics frequently has issue books where different heroes join forces together to face a greater evil, also it is a characteristic of Marvel to describe as specifically as possible each character’s personalities and to depict the rivalry between each one of them, even if they are fighting in the same side, sometimes in a few pages they get to interchange punches between them but usually the fight is left inconclusive. In Marvel’s new DVD Hulk VS we have three of the most powerful and popular world wide characters, The Incredible Hulk, Wolverine, and The Mighty Thor, facing each other in two amusing but unfortunately too short episodes to clarify one thing: Hulk is the Strongest there is.

In Hulk Vs Wolverine, we see that the director took the same approach as in the comic books, many times these two heroes have met face to face and have exchange some blows, their attitudes are so alike that they repel each other as they were brothers, this plus their personalities, stories, and appeal, make them the perfect match. The only thing that separates them is their power. Wolverine is hired by the Canadian government to stop by all means a terrible menace that have appear in the country, The Hulk. Wolverine gets excited at the challenge, and accepts the offering. When they finally meet they go at each other without holding back, until the reason of the destruction is reveal, a sinister mastermind planning to create the most powerful weapon of mass destruction there is. Here not only does wolverine battles the Hulk, but also he is confronted by his past. This movie is great in all levels but the conclusion, the addition of barely seen Marvel characters makes this movie a great addition to the fans, here we will see characters like Omega Red, Sabertooth, Lady Deathstrike and the character who managed to steal some pot light: Deadpool. It is thanks to Deadpool’s attitude that the action is constantly refresh with some comedy making the movie more enjoyable. There is something else to say about this movie it is not its average Saturday morning cartoon, there will be blood, destructions, lose limbs and occasionally a death in this short.

Hulk Vs Thor is different than the previous one, I Could say that I enjoy more because I saw more hero against hero action than in the previous movie. Nonetheless, this one is less graphic than the other, there is no lost of limbs and real deaths. This does not matter since the story is, at my consideration, better, the match is more enjoyable, since it is truly the clash of similar powers but opposite personalities. Wolverine and Hulk shared many traits that makes their fight exciting, enjoyable, but predictable. It becomes just rage against rage, but when an enraged Hulk is face against a noble and equally powerful god such as Thor, the audience can see more conflict not only in the physical level but also a clash in a personal and moral level between character. It also describes a character that although appealing and powerful has not been commercialized enough, Thor is a character who has appears in some shows as supporting hero, but the mythology behind him is as exciting as Spiderman, and Wolverine, and this movie manages to show us his world, and persuade us to know more about him.

Technically, each movie is impressively depicted in any aspects from excellent animation, outstanding music, good story line, script, voice acting everything is perfect. It definitely a lot of fun, and each story tries to teach you something about the characters and their environment, in every dimensions from the moral to the physical, they shows us their emotions, feelings, and decisions going through their heads making the audience feel sympathetic to each one them. From the aesthetic point of view I was impress how the director and animators paid tribute to the original covers and images from comic books where these characters are seem confronted each other. I had to say that I did not expect that much for these DVDs since the main character barely knows how to speak but he really make an impact, I Recommend these DVDs for fans to the Marvel animated films like the Avengers, I have to say that the 2 Disk should be in your collection, also its 3D cover looks really attractive and powerful. But most of all for Thor, Wolverine and Specially Hulk fans this should be a most have since rarely we see story of these characters by themselves at his best, by the way Hulk Fans this movie would makes a statement and a good support for those never ending debate of who is the strongest. Let us hope for Marvel to continue releasing the Vs series, with the same quality level, and including new heroes.

RockNRolla DVD Review

Monday, January 26th, 2009

When I first sat down to watch Guy Ritchie’s RockNRolla, I was bored ten minutes in. First off, too many characters get introduced too quickly; add to this the thick British accent, the convoluted plot that only adds to the confusion and you end up with, disinterest. However, around the 45 minute mark, what we might call the second half of the movie, RockNRolla got a whole lot better. The dialog got wittier, the characters more interesting, even the plot began to make sense. The final result was a notably entertaining movie.

Lenny Cole (Tom Wilkinson) is the crime lord who has his hands in everything. Uri is a Russian developer who wants to make a deal and therefore goes to Lenny to grease the wheels of government. Uri, lends Lenny his lucky painting until the deal is done. However, the painting is soon stolen by Lenny’s stepson Johnny Quid (Toby Kebbell). Uri has even more problems when the money he is securing, to pay Lenny, through his accountant Stella (Thandie Newton) keeps getting stolen. The source of the thief is a gang known as The Wild Bunch which includes One Two(Gerard Butler), Mumbles(Idris Elba) and Handsome Bob(Tom Hardy).

The cast of this movie is amazing. Tom Wilkinson, Toby Kebbell and Gerard Butler give great performances. I was specially surprised with Toby Kebbell performance. This is the first time I’ve seen him in a movie and I hope to see a lot more of him in other films. While some would say that Guy Ritchie’s gangster world is lacking in reality, I like Ritchie’s fantastical take on this world and the witty dialog he writes.

The couple of action scenes are also exciting and the movie managed keep things interesting until the end. The only bad thing is that a lot of us have seen Ritchie do this sort of thing before in movies like Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch. I would probably rate this move as a close third compared to the other two. Therefore, if you enjoyed either Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels or Snatch, you’ll probably enjoy RockNRolla.

Warner Bros is releasing the two disc special edition DVD which includes one deleted scene, an eight minute feature on shooting in London and a commentary track with Guy Ritchie and Actor Mark Strong (Archie). The second disc includes a digital copy of the movie to play on either Windows Media Player or iTunes.

Outlander Movie Review

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

Hmmm, interesting, a combination of futuristic sci-fi and Iron Age epic in one package. It‘s not very strong in either individually but the combination was actually pretty smooth. To be honest, I was expecting a low budget production with a sub par plot but I was delighted to see the opposite. It’s not a great movie, but it is better than I expected it to be. It is a good action flick that has a little of everything: the sci-fi, alien aspect, the rustic, primitive world of Vikings, man vs. monster battle, a dab of a love story, and the pressure of being an outsider in a foreign society. This flick could easily remind you of Beowulf or Planet of the Apes. But where Apes was more thought provoking, symbolic, and trying to make a statement, this one is more simplistic . . . we must kill the beast before it kills us all. Sometimes keeping it simple is better or at least more entertaining.

The movie starts in space as the outlander is about to crash land on our planet Earth. It is loud and attention grabbing with pretty good special effects. It is a high tech ship with high tech aliens. One of which is a human being type alien named Kainan (James Caviezel) and the other is a slightly similar but much smaller version of the monster from Cloverfield, a Moorwen. The battle between these two has now reached the Viking land of Norway, around 700 A.D. Kainan tries to fit in the Viking village all the while trying to warn them of the dangers of this Moorwen. Let’s just say that a lot of hunting ensues from both fronts of this war. Mr. Caviezel is a good actor and he always does good work. This somber character is right up his alley. Another well cast performer is Sophia Myles as Freya, the King’s daughter. I remember her best from the first Underworld, the blonde vampire, Kate Beckinsale’s rival. In this picture, she very much looked the part. Speaking of the King, Rothgar is played by John Hurt who did a good job but is not very convincing as a Viking King. It was good to see Ron Perlman in regular skin tone as opposed to fire engine red. He plays Gunnar, the leader of a neighboring village. All in all, the performances were okay but this film’s focus is on the story and the action that it brings. I’ve noticed that Mr. Caviezel seems to get beat up a lot in his movies; poor guy.

The overall look and feel of the movie was well done. Again, I thought it was going to be cheap, but it really wasn’t. Nice and appropriate sceneries, good and not too elaborate costumes, the weaponry, the high tech gadgets, and the village itself contributed to the effectiveness of the story. Howard McCain co-wrote and directed this piece. Being his first major motion picture, I’d say he is off to a good start. Considering the lack of hoopla for this movie, it’s not a bad choice at the theater.

Inkheart Movie Review

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

After being in the arks of New Line Cinema for more than a year, finally we got the opportunity to see Inkheart. A film based on a best-selling book of the same name by acclaimed German author Cornelia Funke. A book adaptation that barely meets expectations.

The main problem with this adaptation has to be the screenplay. This is a screenplay that fails to create excitement, adventure and imagination. Ingredients which are the essence of a good adventure fantasy film. It seems like the filmmakers were more worry about keeping the PG rating than into adding some excitement and darkness to film. For the most part the film is very slow. It is only the cast, who gave the movie enough to keep watching. The one character that I felt stood out was Dustfinger played by Paul Bettany. He has been in my radar ever since his performance in “A Knight Tale”. He was the one that was able to make a real connection with the audience with its mystery and comedy.

There is no doubt that this book had the potential for being a great movie and it is a shamed that the filmmakers where not able to take the best out of this great book. Jeopardizing the possible adaptation of the next two books in the trilogy Inkspell and Inkdeath.

BIG MAN JAPAN Trailer

Here is the trailer for Magnet’s, BIG MAN JAPAN. The film is set to open in theaters March, 2009

A middle-aged slacker living in a rundown, graffiti-ridden slum, Daisato’s job involves being shocked by bolts of electricity that transform him into a stocky, stick-wielding giant several stories high who is entrusted with defending Japan from a host of bizarre monsters. But while his predecessors were national heroes, he is a pariah among the citizens he protects, who bitterly complain about the noise and destruction of property he causes. And Daisato has his own problems –an agent insistent on branding him with sponsor advertisements, an Alzheimer-afflicted grandfather who transforms into a giant in dirty underwear, and a family who is embarrassed by his often cowardly exploits. A wickedly deadpan spin on the giant Japanese superhero, BIG MAN JAPAN is an outrageous portrait of a pathetic but truly unique hero.

BIG MAN JAPAN is the sixth film in Magnet’s “Six Shooter Film Series,” a series of six films highlighting the vanguard of genre cinema from around the globe. Also included in this series are: LET THE RIGHT ONE IN ( Sweden ), SPECIAL (US), Nacho Vigalondo’s TIMECRIMES ( Spain ), Ollie Blackburn’s DONKEY PUNCH (UK) and EDEN LOG (France).
