Seven Pounds Movie Review

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

Judging from the trailer, you would think that Seven Pounds is a pounding and surprising mystery film. At least that was my first reaction to the trailer. When I heard that the film was getting a heavy Oscar Buzz, I immediately figured that drama has to be the main focus point of the film. Changing completely the expectations that I had for the movie. By the end of the film I was correct, Seven Pounds is that mystery film that slowly evolves into a heavy drama by trying to get across the story of a tragic redemption.

The beginning of the film is a just a big mystery. We see Ben Thomas (Will Smith) talking and meting strangers, with the idea of helping them, but we don’t know what his motive is. Is he dead? , Did he win the lottery and want to share some of his fortune? Are the people that he is meeting good people? These were some of the speculations that blew through my mind in the first 20 minutes of the film. However, between the flashbacks of Ben’s Thomas life and the conversation with his brother in law. The meaning of the Seven Pounds became evident and the film changed from a mystery to a deep drama. I must admit that once the mystery was out of the equation, the film became just another drama. It is the dramatic performance by Will Smith and Rosario Dawson that kept the movie interesting to the end.

Seven pounds has the drama and caliber performance to obtain an Oscar nomination in any category, however judging from the quality of films released in this year’s Oscar’s season the road to that nomination will be very difficult.

Creating Central City

Women of the Spirit

My City Screams

Adapted from Will Eisner’s comic book series, THE SPIRIT is a classic action-adventure-romance genre-twister written for the screen and directed by FRANK MILLER (creator of 300 and SIN CITY). It is the story of a former rookie cop who returns mysteriously from the dead as the SPIRIT (Gabriel Macht) to fight crime from the shadows of Central City. His arch-enemy, the OCTOPUS (Samuel L. Jackson) has a different mission: he’s going to wipe out Spirit’s beloved city as he pursues his own version of immortality. The Spirit tracks this cold-hearted killer from Central City’s rundown warehouses, to the damp catacombs, to the windswept waterfront … all the while facing a bevy of beautiful women who either want to seduce, love or kill our masked crusader. Surrounding him at every turn are ELLEN DOLAN (Sarah Paulson), the whip-smart girl-next-door; SILKEN FLOSS (Scarlett Johansson), a punk secretary and frigid vixen; PLASTER OF PARIS (Paz Vega), a murderous French nightclub dancer; LORELEI (Jaime King), a phantom siren; and MORGENSTERN (Stana Katic), a sexy young cop.

Dr Seuss Horton Hears a Who! DVD Review

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

FILM REVIEW: Based on the 1954 book of the same name “Horton Hears a Who!” by Dr Seuss has been directed by Jimmy Hayward and Steve Martino with a screenplay by Ken Daurio and Cinco Paul. “Horton Hears a Who!” has all the ingredients of a great adaptation with the heart and beauty that only Dr Seuss can give to all of his characters and stories. An instant classic that opens the door to more Dr Seuss CGI animation films to come.

The film tells the story of an elephant named Horton (Jim Carey), who one morning hears a cry coming from a tiny dust speck floating through the air. Stunned by the cry that he hears, Horton soon discovers that the cries belong to microscopic whos who live in the speck in a city called who-ville. But in his attempt to help the people of Who-ville find a safe place for the speck, Horton will have to go against his neighbors who think that he has lost his mind.

The presentation of the film is full of vivid colors that absorbs the mind of the audience in to the world of Dr. Seuss like never before. The sound is superb complementing the magic of the animation. First time director Jimmy Hayward, who was part of the animation team behind Toy Story, Toy Story 2 and Finding Nemo, and Steve Martino could not have chosen a better screenplay adaptation to direct.

The selection of Jim Carey’s voice to give life to Horton’s was just perfect. The same can be said about Steve Carell for the voice of the Mayor of Who-ville. Aside from the voice selection which was right on the money, a lot of the credit has to go to Ken Daurio and Cinco Paul that in their adaptation of the book decided to keep Dr. Seuss’ essence by maintaining the innocent humor, the human message and avoiding falling in the modern adult humor that is always repeated in this type of film in recent years.

DVD: The 2 Disc Special Edition includes a digital copy and many little features that take viewers beyond the making of this great film, especially in the animation process. Interesting features like “Deleted Footage and Animation Screen Tests”, “That’s One Big Elephant” and “Bringing the Characters to Life” , in which animators and directors talk about the ideas for film, provide an good background as to how animated films are made. The DVD includes a new “Ice Age short”, based on Sid and Scrat characters. There are also a couple of features for the kids; “Elephant Fun” is a short documentary in which kids get the opportunity to learn some facts about Elephants. And “We Are Here!”, a memory game in which kids get to play with patterns in order to save Whoville. Overall this 2 Disc Special Edition includes plenty of interesting and fun special features to be recommended. Full DVD details are listed below.

Set in the insular world of Brighton Beach , Brooklyn , TWO LOVERS is a classic romantic drama, with Joaquin Phoenix giving a raw and vulnerable performance as Leonard, a charismatic but troubled young man who moves back into his childhood home following a recent heartbreak. While recovering under the watchful eye of his parents (Isabella Rossellini and Moni Monoshov), Leonard meets two women in quick succession: Michelle (Gwyneth Paltrow), a mysterious and beautiful neighbor who is exotic and out-of-place in Leonard’s staid world, and Sandra, the lovely and caring daughter of a businessman who is buying out his family’s dry-cleaning business.

Leonard becomes deeply infatuated by Michelle, who seems poised to fall for him, but is having a self-destructive affair with a married man. At the same time, mounting pressure from his family pushes him towards committing to Sandra. Leonard is forced to make an impossible decision – between the impetuousness of desire and the comfort of love – or risk falling back into the darkness that nearly killed him.

SYNOPSIS: Disney’s under the sea classic continues in this new Special Edition of THE LITTLE MERMAID: RETURN TO THE SEA, the magical sequel to one of the most celebrated animated films of all time! Ariel, Sebastian, Flounder and all your favorite characters from the original movie splash into a wonderful adventure overflowing with more unforgettable characters, fin-tapping songs and an exciting, action-packed story. Ariel and Eric must hide their precious daughter Melody’s mermaid heritage to protect her from Ursula’s revengeful sister Morgana. But when the lure of the sea proves too strong for Melody, they call upon King Triton and all the good creatures on land and under the waves to help rescue their daughter and restore harmony to the seas.

REVIEW: Disney has been able to market successfully sequels for many of its movie classics. This time around and for a limited time Disney is releasing “The Little Mermaid II Return to The Sea” Special Edition, the sequel to the 1989’s classic film “The Little Mermaid”. The Special Edition of the Little Mermaid II will be in shelves December 16, 2008.

The film is basically the same DVD that was release back in 2000, but digitally mastered according to the specs. I was not able to see any major improvement in the picture and sound. It seems that Disney is giving the public to own this sequel for a limited time only. Overall the film is a nice addition to the Disney collection, if you don’t own the previews DVD release of this film. Kids and parents will have a nice time together watching this film.

The disappointment with the DVD is with the bonus features which are very slim in this “Special Edition”. It includes games and activities, as well as a the deleted song “Gonna Get My Wish”. However, the only good feature is the new game “The Little Memaid || Underwater Mer-Venture Challenge Game” which is a nice game for the little ones.

Mamma Mia DVD Review

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

SYNOPSIS: An independent, single mother who owns a small hotel on an idyllic Greek island, Donna (Meryl Streep) is about to let go of Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), the spirited daughter she’s raised alone. For Sophie’s wedding, Donna has invited her two lifelong best girlfriends—practical and no-nonsense Rosie (Julie Walters) and wealthy, multi-divorcee Tanya (Christine Baranski)—from her one-time backing band, Donna and the Dynamos. But Sophie has secretly invited three guests of her own. On a quest to find the identity of her father to walk her down the aisle, she brings back three men from Donna’s past to the Mediterranean paradise they visited 20 years earlier. Over 24 chaotic, magical hours, new love will bloom and old romances will be rekindled on this lush island full of possibilities. Inspired by the storytelling magic of ABBA’s hit songs from “Dancing Queen” and “S.O.S.” to “Money, Money, Money” and “Take a Chance on Me,” Mamma Mia! The Movie is a celebration of mothers and daughters, old friends and new family found.

DVD: The 2 Disc Special Edition will be available for limited time only with a digital copy. I think the DVD fells short in special features category , it doesn’t contain many appealing features to say that it is a must have. The only one that I found worth watching was “The Making of Mamma Mia!”, a 24 minutes documentary that give viewers an in-depth look into the creation of Mamma Mia! The Movie. Probably the best feature is the onscreen lyrics that allows viewers to sing along to the film’s 19 songs. As well as to play the film with the onscreen lyrics. I would only recommend this 2 Disc Special Edition DVD to those that interesting in getting a digital copy of the film, otherwise it is just enough to get the single disc edition which contains the film and the onscreen lyrics feature. Overall Mamma Mia in DVD will be a great gift this Holiday season
