Oh no! Not another teen movie! Yes my friends, it is inevitable. But hey, if you like that kind of movie you might want to give this one a shot because it’s not bad at all. I really expected a cheap, unsatisfying, and untalented piece of work even for its genre and what I got was an enjoyably funny, raunchy, and politically incorrect movie that is a smorgasbord of many other teen movies wrapped up into one simple package. This one reminded me of the Last American Virgin, Superbad, Eurotrip, Road Trip, and the all-time classics, the American Pie series. Heck, it even reminded me a little of the Dukes of Hazzard, mostly because of the car which in this case is a 1969 Pontiac GTO, a.k.a. “the Judge” (what a beautiful piece of machinery). So if you liked any of the above, there is a high probability that you will like this flick. Sure it uses the same type of situational humor, highly embarrassing moments, and jaw dropping one liners that you find in these other movies mentioned but I for one don’t get tired of them so long as it is done right and I believe this movie did it right.
Starting with the title, this movie does not beat around the bush as far as its intention. What you see is what you are going to get which is why I don’t think you’ll be disappointed because you’ll know what to expect. I mean really, a movie called Sex Drive with a picture of a guy in a doughnut shaped mascot costume on the poster can’t really raise your expectations. Initially though, I was a little turned off by the lack of star power. The only really well known actors in this movie are James Marsden who plays Rex, the abusive older brother, and Seth Green who was very well cast as Ezekiel, a young Amish man. They both contributed nicely to this picture and had some of the funniest moments in it too. You might recognize two of the leading performers, Josh Zuckerman as Ian who is the walking hormone and the reason for the Drive, and Amanda Crew as Felicia, Ian’s BFF. They are teamed up with the third leg of the tripod, Clark Duke as Lance, another of Ian’s BFFs who is the next generation Hugh Hefner. Even though these characters are as typical as can be, the performances were pretty good. Well actually just about every aspect of this movie is as typical as can be; the characters, the story, the script, and the humor to name a few. But again, it is still a fun movie to watch.
It is always fun to see scenes in a movie where you recognize the location, even more so if you’ve been there. This movie was very special for me personally because a good piece of it was filmed in Dolphin Mall in Miami, a place that I am familiar with. For those of you that live in South Florida and have been to Dolphin Mall, you might get an extra kick out of this movie. Director Sean Anders, who also wrote the screenplay, has given us a pretty decent teen movie considering it’s only his second job as director. Could this turn into another instant teen classic? That depends on you, the moviegoer, but I will tell you that after you see it, you’re going to want to go “visit your grandmother”.
