Jackson ) has a different mission: he’s going to wipe out Spirit’s beloved city as he pursues his own version of immortality. The Spirit tracks this cold-hearted killer from Central City’s rundown warehouses, to the damp catacombs, to the windswept waterfront … all the while facing a bevy of beautiful women who either want to seduce, love or kill our masked crusader. Surrounding him at every turn are ELLEN DOLAN (Sarah Paulson), the whip-smart girl-next-door; SILKEN FLOSS (Scarlett Johansson), a punk secretary and frigid vixen; PLASTER OF PARIS (Paz Vega), a murderous French nightclub dancer; LORELEI (Jaime King), a phantom siren; and MORGENSTERN (Stana Katic), a sexy young cop.

Then of course, there’s SAND SAREF (Eva Mendes), the jewel thief with dangerous curves. She’s the love of his life turned bad. Will he save her or will she kill him?

The House Bunny … Silly, Silly Fun

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

“The eyes are the nipples of the face.” Yeah, this is what you’re gonna get throughout . . . silly, silly fun. By the way, this is a Happy Madison Production which for comedy fans would be good news. Well, there are some very funny moments and the premise sounds entertaining enough, but it just misses true Happy Madison caliber. I’ve always been a fan of Anna Faris and I was looking forward to seeing her in her first real starring role, especially something like this which is right up her ally. She wasn’t exactly over the top fantastic but she held her own and really made the movie worthwhile. She is very good at playing ditsy and she has a proven record for comedic mastery. Her line delivery and facial expressions are some of her top talents. In this film she also throws in a heavy dose of sexiness which I always knew she could pull off. The fact that I think she’s adorable helps influence my opinion. Did I just admit that out loud? Anyhow, she is in great shape and looks very hot playing this character. Guys, come on, the background of the story is all about Playboy Playmates and Bunnies, Hugh Hefner, and the Playboy Mansion. Of course the eye candy abounds in this movie, Anna Faris included. Ok, wait a tick, gorgeous, ditsy blonde leaves Playboy Mansion, goes to a college and ends up helping everybody around her including herself . . . this sounds like Legally Blonde meets The Girls Next Door.

Enough about Anna, though, I mean there were other people in the movie too. Colin Hanks, for example, plays Oliver who catches Shelley’s (Anna) eye. He did a decent job. The Zeta house misfits include the likes of Natalie (Emma Stone), Mona (Kat Dennings), Joanne (Rumer Willis, yeah Bruce’s daughter, uh huh), and even Katharine McPhee playing a character appropriately named Harmony. These are some of the bunch and they all gave pretty good performances but Emma stands out and was just as sharp as Anna. It was nice to see Beverly D’Angelo on the big screen again. She plays Mrs. Hagstrom, a snooty sorority house mother. With a story like this one you would expect the variety of characters to be like a melting pot and this piece of work does not fall short. The storyline for this picture is simple and predictable but improved by the Happy Madison flare for the absurd. One of the weaker aspects of the film is the script. Again, the movie had its really funny moments but at other times the dialogue was too corny. Luckily the good funny moments were well spread out so that just as you are about to get turned off by the movie, one of those moments would pop up to keep you going. The appropriate musical selection for the soundtrack also helped entertain.

Fred Wolf has been involved as a writer and/or actor in such works as Black Sheep, Joe Dirt, Dickie Roberts, Without a Paddle, and Strange Wilderness. With these comedic credentials, he has the experience to crank out some good stuff as director. This being only his second gig as director, there is room for improvement but he is on the right track. If you are a fan of these kinds of comedies or if you are a fan of Anna Faris, you might want to check this one out. (3 stars)

Death Race Movie Review

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

What’s the name of that particular movie showing on a cable channel, Spike or FX or one of those? Isn’t it called “Movie for Guys That Like Movies”? Well, this one belongs in that category. This of course means that I enjoyed it. Tough guys, hot girls, fast cars, heavy artillery, and good ol’ fashioned fights equals a very fun movie. It is intense, action packed, dark, violent, ragged and rough around the edges. What more would you want? Oh, I’m sorry, you want a good story to go with that . . . well, you don’t quite get all you want with this movie. The action is great, sharply captured and displayed, but the story is typical, predictable, and weak. This flick reminded me a lot of The Running Man with the Governor. The premise is just too far fetched and the setting of the story established in the beginning is really unnecessary. But who cares! It’s all about the action, right?

This film really seemed like a life size video game. That is both good and bad; good for the action, bad for the quality of the movie. The acting was as good as you would expect for this genre highlighted by Jason Statham as Jensen Ames, Tyrese Gibson as Machine Gun Joe, Ian McShane as Coach, and the coldest most ruthless prison warden you can imagine, Hennessey played by Joan Allen. You’ll be surprised on how chillingly intimidating Joan is while playing this role. Hard times call for hard games and hard games have to be run by hard people and Hennessey is perfect for the job. For her, nothing else matters but viewer demand for the race, and I do mean nothing. Even though the characters are generally appealing and as varied as the competitors in the Olympics, their development is almost non-existent. We get two or three sentences of background and they are thrown onto the track. I would have liked a little more background on these people. Luckily the actors gave decent performances because the script didn’t help either. It was simple/borderline childish. But then again, it’s all about the action, right? The soundtrack was pretty good though.

You can understand why this movie was made this way once you establish that Paul W.S. Anderson was the Writer, Director, and Producer. With his involvement in one or all of those capacities in such movies as the Resident Evils, Mortal Kombat, and Alien vs. Predator, it is clear how this one follows suit and how it also looks like a video game. He can successfully add this one to his collection. If you are caught up with all the summer blockbusters and it’s your turn to pick a movie to see and you’re in the mood for some down and dirty action, this is not a bad choice. Oh and ladies, even though I mentioned that this is a man’s movie, you do get some eye candy with Mr. Statham. Don’t worry guys, we’ve got a hot new lady to sweeten our vision as well. Remember the name Natalie Martinez who plays Case. Hey, it’s all about the action, right? (3 1/2)

Gossip Girl Season One on DVD is Just a Wonderful

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

This series is all about New York ‘s elite, the offspring of some of the wealthiest families in the upper east side and their expensive private school. It’s narrated by a gossipy blogger alias “ Gossip Girl” who loves to dish about these privilege’s youths scandalous escapades, hookups and their fabulous drama-filled social events. This series definitely pushes the envelope, and its scandalous storylines makes this one a definite guilty pleasure. But please put your younger ones to bed before you indulge in Season 1 of this wonderfully original series because the last thing you want is your child emulating any part of these teens racy adventures in sex, violence, drugs, manipulation, and outright rebellion, and the fact that they have unlimited trust funds to fuel their escapades, only makes it more outrageous than anything else on television

The series deals with the complicated relationship between frenemies Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester) and Serena van der Woodson (Blake Lively), two poor little rich girls, each with their own dysfunctional families, who are so good at being bad, and they could not have picked a better pair of actresses with such outrageous chemistry, as these two phenomenal actresses who play their parts to a tee. Blair is a rigid virgin, horrible to anyone who crosses her, who dreams of consummating her relationship with her boyfriend since childhood, whom she suspects has a thing for here BFF Serena. She spends her time scheming and manipulating everything to her favor and lashing out at anyone who stand in the way of her getting what she wants. Her ultimate goal is to marry her boyfriend Nate and seal her future as a rich Yale graduate climbing the social ladder and stepping on anyone who gets in her way. Serena is more of a free spirit, who’s partying past has filled her with shame and secrets, she left suddenly for boarding school and has returned just as suddenly, resulting in everyone speculating as to why. The only thing anyone knows is that she is filled with secrets and refuses to follow the social rules everyone seams to accept as the norm. She longs to break free of her family name and just be, and begins to date Dan Humphry, a poor yet nice, intelligent and gentle young man, who’s not from an elite family and who’s as down to earth and normal as they come. He has been infatuated with her for most of his adolescent life but she just realized he exists and begins to fall for the normalcy of his life and family, neither of them realizing that their parents share a history and romance that is almost identical to the one they are living, with all the difficulty and hardship that comes with dating outside of your social class. The relationships and love triangles that play out between these teens and their peers from their exclusive and expensive private school gives us an insight into the lives of the rich and privileged and show us that when it comes to love, relationships and family, rich or poor we are all in the same boat, with the same problems and complications, and that money sometimes only serves complicates things even more, and is not the key to happiness.

I definitely recommend this series to anyone who interested in seeing how the other half lives, and anyone who enjoys a little drama, scandal and of course, gossip. This exclusive cast of characters couldn’t have been better if they truly carried their characters personalities, instead of just acting them. The woman are truly bitch personified and the men do not lag behind. This is a truly remarkable cast. It is definitely the guiltiest of all pleasures, so I urge you to indulge.

Justice League Season One is Rock Solid

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

What kid who grow up in the 70s or 80s doesn’t remember Saturday morning cartoons? Of those cartoons, one of the best was the “Super Friends” which featured the Justice League. The “Super Friends” was one of my favorite cartoons and besides the “Disney’s Adventures of the Gummi Bears “, the only other reason to get up early on a Saturday morning. The “Super Friends” featured some of our favorite superheroes like Superman, Batman, Robin, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash, Green Lantern and a bunch of others. However what really made the show stand out, where the villains lead by Lex Luthor and known as the Legion of Doom. Yes, there were other villains beside the Legion, but I always considered the episodes with the Legion to be the best.

After adapting both Batman and Superman into successful animated series, Bruce Timm had only but one place to go: Justice League. Bruce Timm decided he wanted to keep the new Justice League in line with the comic book and the focus on the characters. Not wanting to overwhelm the series with too many characters Bruce decide on the following heros: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter and Hawkgirl. Season 1 of Justice League debuted on the cartoon network in 2001 and become an instant hit. Sadly, this series has no Legion of Doom.

I never caught the series on Cartoon Network, but after watching the Blu-ray edition of season 1, all I can say is that I’m very impressed. The animation is beautiful and the stories are nicely built with a good foundation. The only problem I had is that a lot of the conflict is easily resolved in the last 5-10 minutes of the show. I also wasn’t too happy that all the episodes are in 4:3 format and not widescreen. However, in Blu-ray the colors are bright and beautiful and nothing seems washed-out.

The 26 episodes are contained on 3 Blu-ray disk. The must see episodes are “Secret Origins” which is where Martian Manhunter telepathically summons the super friends to work together to defeat an evil alien life form. “The Enemy Below” is also quite good and features a favorite from “Super Friends”, Aquaman. Here Aquaman is the King of Atlantis and has a grudge against the humans. “Legends” is another classic episode featuring a throw back to the golden age of comic books. One thing is for certain, season one of Justice League is rock solid and all I can say is, “I can’t wait for Season 2.” (4 Stars)

The Sarah Connor Chronicles Are Here to Stay

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

The Terminator franchise has been one of the most successful and recognized sci-fi films in the world, with Terminator 2 Judgment Day becoming a movie classic. When the news came out that a television series was in the works, expectations among fans grew. Increasing those expectations was the fact that “The Sarah Connor Chronicles were taking place where T2 left off. The end result was a very smart, highly entertaining and totally absorbing television series that left fans and non fans enjoy one of the best Sci-Fi stories of all times without any limits.

Like it was expected the pilot episode plays very similar to the Terminator 2 , Sarah and John Connor are running away from the law and from the Terminator. Which in away was good, because it brought back to mind the rush and the excitement that T2 had. For many fans having that similarity forced them to immediately compare it to Judgment Day, without giving it a fair chance. The good thing about the next eight episodes is that the story stops being a simple chasing story and other factors and characters are introduced in the series, giving it a nice turning point to the story.

One of the things that was really fascinating in the series was how the creators and writers took their time analyzing every little detail from the three films. The use of the time machine, the picture that Sarah Connor took with her dog back in the first Terminator and the scenes where Sarah was in Asylum, are just some of the details that hooked fans of the movie franchise into this television series.

The cast selection was appropriate. For example, Lena Headey as Sarah Connor was right on the money by providing the energy and the toughness similar to the one shown by Linda Hamilton in T2. Thomas Dekker as John Connor gives a strong performance in the series, similar to his performance in the T.V hit, Heroes. Finally, Summer Glau as the Terminator is hard to absorb. Her performance is good, but at the beginning it is very hard to see this girl replacing Arnold Schwarzenegger. However, as the season goes on, the audience will get used to this new female model of Terminator.

This is one of those television series that is destined to be a success. Not only because it is based on one of the most successfully sci-fi franchise in movie history, but it has the right ingredients. It is fun to watch, it has good performances and well written episodes.

“Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” Season One will be release in DVD on August 19, 2008. The DVD is loaded with over four hours of bonus features including commentaries from the producers and cast , deleted scenes, gag real, extended scenes and best of all the “Creating the Chronicles” featurette which is by far the best bonus feature of the DVD.

Out of obligation-and unable to escape-they trudge to not one, not two, but four relative-choked festivities, increasingly mortified to find childhood fears raised, adolescent wounds reopened…and their very future together uncertain. As Brad counts the hours to when he can get away from their parents, step-parents, siblings and an assortment of nieces and nephews, Kate is starting to hear the ticking of a different kind of clock. And by the end of the day, she is beginning to wonder if their crazy families’ choices are not so crazy after all.
